What should I do first?
Keep people away from it and do not try to deal with it yourself. A tree under tension after a storm is genuinely dangerous — a trunk resting on a fence or a roof is holding a great deal of stored energy, and cutting it in the wrong place releases that all at once. Stay clear and ring someone.
Having a tree come down on your house is frightening and it usually happens at the worst possible moment. The practical part is short: keep clear, and get someone who knows what they are looking at to see it.
What if the tree is on a power line?
Do not go near it, and do not let anyone else. Ring 105, the national power cut line, which puts you straight through to National Grid for the South West. They deal with anything touching their equipment, free, and they will make it safe before any tree work can happen. This is not a job for a tree surgeon.
What if the tree is blocking a road?
Report it to Cornwall Council, who are responsible for clearing the public highway. If it is blocking a road and causing immediate danger, ring 999. For a private drive, a track or a lane serving your own property, that is where I come in.
Will my insurance cover it?
Often, for the damage to the building and sometimes for removing the tree. It varies a great deal between policies, so ring your insurer early — before work starts if you safely can. Photographs of the tree where it fell, taken before anything is moved, are worth having for the claim.
I can give you a written quote to send to an insurer. I cannot tell you what your policy covers, and anyone who tells you they can is guessing.
What does the work usually involve?
Making it safe first, then clearing it. That normally means relieving the tension in the trunk in a controlled way, taking off anything hanging or unstable, getting the weight off whatever it has landed on, and then cutting it down to a size that can be moved. Sometimes the rest can wait for daylight.
What does it cost?
I do not put prices on this website, because a price that means anything has to come from looking at the actual tree. What I can tell you is what the price depends on. Every quote is free and given on the day I visit.
