Redruth is the town where people are most often surprised by planning constraints. The historic centre and several of the older residential streets around it carry conservation area status, a legacy of the town's mining wealth and the substantial buildings that came with it. That means trees above a modest size are protected automatically and the council has to be notified six weeks before work — not applied to, but notified, which is a distinction that catches people out.
