When can I cut my hedge?
Outside the bird nesting season wherever possible, which in practice means September to February. It is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 to damage or destroy an active nest, and hedges are where a great many birds nest. Between March and August I check a hedge before cutting it.
If there is an active nest, that section waits. Usually the rest of the hedge can still be done. This is the single most common thing customers do not know, and it is worth knowing: a contractor who runs a flail through a hedge in May without looking is breaking the law and taking you along with them.
Can an overgrown conifer hedge be brought back?
Sometimes, and it depends entirely on the species. Yew and beech will regrow from old wood, so they can be cut back hard and will recover. Leylandii, cypress and most conifers will not — cut into the brown and it stays brown, permanently. That is why the height comes down in stages rather than all at once.
Leylandii is everywhere in west Cornwall, planted as a fast shelter belt against the wind and then left. If yours has got away from you, the honest answer is usually that it can be reduced in height and kept there, but the sides can only go back as far as the green.
What about a hedge on a boundary?
The law lets you cut back growth that crosses onto your property, up to the boundary line, and no further. You cannot lean over and cut your neighbour's side, and the cuttings technically belong to them. For a hedge over two metres of evergreen there is also a formal high hedges process through the council.
If a hedge is causing a genuine problem between two households, the council runs a high hedges process for exactly that.
